The signup board is between the bar and kitchen area and is ready for members to signup for their favorite job. With the new rules requiring members to work 4-hours at a major club function the board will probably fill up quickly but there is plenty of work in all areas for everyone. We can really use help on the Friday before setting up tents and such and then again on Sunday to clean up, this is a good opportunity to get in those extra hours you need too.

I want to thank Joe Teer Jr. for all his years of service to the Chicken Fry and want to keep up the tradition of having the best summer party on the lake but I can’t do this without everyone’s help, so please signup early and let’s continue to show our strength as a great club to be a member of or just a fun place to visit!

 We will also be hosting a Pre-Party Friday night August 6th the band will be Area 51, so there is also a signup sheet for that night too.

The Groove Daddies and Sons of Circumstance will be playing Saturday from 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM they are a couple of great local bands who can keep the party going. Invite all your friends, co-workers and families out to the club’s best party of the year!

A friend of mine sent me this link of a video of the snow geese on Lake Springfield.

 It is certainly hard to picture. But it becomes a bit easier after a visit to Lake Springfield in late February. Last Wednesday, tens of thousands of snow geese — including snow, blue and Ross’s geese — carpeted Lake Springfield north of Lindsay Bridge. They sat on the lake in a giant kidney-shaped raft. Every once in awhile they would decide to get up and move. It’s then that the word “carpet” is most appropriate. They start at one end of the flock, taking to the air from one end to the other, as if an old carpet was being pulled up. When the flock took off together, it obscured the far shoreline of Lake Springfield. The smokestacks of the City Water, Light and Power plant momentarily disappeared in a whirl of white and black. It’s not a new spectacle. Snow geese have been making spring appearances at Lake Springfield for some time now. But it is no less impressive whether it’s the first time or 10th time.

Snow geese — a blue goose really is just the dark color phase of a snow goose — once were near extinction. They have staged a comeback as spectacular as their spring migration shows. Snow geese have prospered partly because they have learned to exploit waste grain during migration. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says there are more than 5 million breeding snow geese. Their numbers have tripled over the past 30 years they’ve been counted during the winter.Unfortunately, wildlife experts fear snow geese will become victims of their own success. They nest in Canada, and the Arctic tundra they choose for nesting is fragile. If too many geese dig up too many roots and tubers, it can take too long to recover. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, snow geese may be competing for resources and space with other birds. “Large areas of the breeding grounds around Hudson Bay have been denuded of all vegetation by geese through overgrazing, grubbing and shoot-pulling,” says a Fish and Wildlife Service report. “(It is) a situation that scientists believe may also be contributing to the decline of breeding populations of other migratory bird species that share the breeding grounds and winter in the United States.” To compensate, hunting rules have been loosened and goose hunters have been given a whole new arsenal of ways to take them. Snow geese can be hunted through March 31 — well after other waterfowl seasons have closed.
 

Chili Cookoff Results

On Saturday, March 6^th,  Anchor Boat Club hosted the East Regional of the Lake Council of Clubs Chili Cookoff.  Our own Paula Conder won the judges’ choice for best chili and Betty Jo Teer finished second.  The Crowd’s choice went to John Stoudt of Sangamo Surf and again Betty Jo finished second.  Lauri Houston won for best theme.  Because Lauri is unavailable for the finals, Rick Eubanks finished second and will represent us at the finals.  So Paula and Rick will advance to the Chili Finals on Saturday April 3^rd  at the Prop Club..  It would be great to send a big crowd over to support out two cooks.  It would be especially nice to be able to go by boat!

A big crowd was on hand and the bar had a very nice day.  There were a lot of new faces in the crowd and they were all impressed with out new building.

A special thanks goes out to Mike Broglin and his crew of electricians who installed a new wiring system in the banquet room (which should come in handy for many events in the future) and getting our new wireless microphone up and running.  Thanks also to those who worked that day including Chuck Finnell, Steve Altmix, John Teer, Andy Clay and a few others I’m sure I’m forgetting.

Finally, thanks to all of our cooks.  I thought all of the chili was very good.  The event was a success because of these cooks donating their time and talent.

Events include: Fish in a barrel, bocce ball, croquet race, wacky washers and balloon toss.

There will also be a 50/50 golf chip shot again this year

Anchor’s Pentathlon Committee is hard at work reviewing last year’s events and looking for some new ideas to make this year’s pentathlon even more fun, challenging, and crazier than last year! THAT COULD BE HARD TO DO.

Each team consists of four players and there is a $50 registration fee ($40 for early registration, prior to May 1^st) per team that covers event entry fees and your choice of free a gift for each player. Of course the bar will be open and there will be food for sale for those who feel the need to ruin their buzz or the need to fuel their body for the intense competition of the day. This year entertainment will follow the games in our new clubhouse along with the awards ceremony, so plan to come and join in on the fun as a team or just to watch Springfield’s best athletes in action!

There are five-events, four-member teams and a lot of food, drinks, extra games and fun for all throughout the day. Entertainment will begin at 4:00 PM inside the new clubhouse and the awards ceremony will begin at 5:00 PM or upon completion of the games if they go longer.

There will be some new games this year along with other activities for all to enjoy whether you are a participant or just there to enjoy the day.
